WHEATON, IL—The DuPage Community Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Janice Newmann Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Fund was established this month by Timothy Newmann, husband of the late Janice M. Newmann, a longtime resident of Medinah and first-grade teacher in Elmhurst, to honor her life, legacy and substantial contributions to the field of education.
“Janice was truly an exceptional educator who touched the lives of many people,” said Timothy Newmann. “Each student that she taught came away from the first-grade experience as a better person and with important educational and interpersonal skills that last a lifetime. Through this scholarship, her legacy of having an important, positive influence on the lives of students will continue far into the future.”
Contributions to the Janice Newmann Memorial Scholarship Fund will be held by the Foundation in perpetuity and be used to generate income for annual scholarships for graduates of York High School in Elmhurst. Candidates for the scholarship will be nominated by academic department heads of York High School and its recipients selected by the School’s guidance office.
Preference in selecting recipients will be given to students who demonstrate certain characteristics set forth by the Fund’s advisors and who: 1) attended Jefferson Elementary School in Elmhurst; 2) are planning a career in Elementary Education; 3) provide an outline of their participation in extracurricular activities, especially, but not limited to, work experience; 4) possess a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5; and 5) are able to demonstrate financial need.
Janice Newmann passed away in December 2006 after a nearly three-year battle with cancer. She had been a first-grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary School in Elmhurst for 35 years. Throughout her career she was much loved by her students and highly respected by her colleagues and others who knew her for her caring nature, dedication, professionalism and unique ability to involve each of her students in the educational process in a positive way.
Janice had planned to retire at the end of 2007 to enjoy the many activities that she loved outside of teaching—activities such as golfing, taking care of her flowers, fishing, spending time at the beach and tubing on the lake. However, she also wanted to stay connected to children, and, therefore, intended to substitute teach when presented with the opportunity.
Individuals wishing to honor Janice’s memory may send their contributions to The Janice Newmann Memorial Scholarship Fund of The DuPage Community Foundation, 2100 Manchester Rd., Bldg. A, Ste. 303, Wheaton, IL 60187-4584, or visit www.dcfdn.org to donate on-line.
Established in 1986, The DuPage Community Foundation is a publicly-supported 501 (c) (3) organization to which contributions are tax deductible. It was created to benefit the people of DuPage County and receives contributions and bequests into a permanent endowment from individuals, corporations, organizations, and foundations wishing to make lasting contributions to the people of DuPage. The earnings on these funds are then used, in accordance with donor wishes, for the Foundation’s grantmaking and community leadership activities.
The DuPage Community Foundation seeks to raise the quality of life throughout DuPage County by developing and channeling philanthropy to meet the needs of its residents. Based on the American virtues of volunteerism and philanthropy, the Foundation fosters a legacy of support for the people of DuPage County by making grants to not-for-profit organizations working in the arts and culture, education, environmental affairs, health, and human services.
